Mgła

Mgła — Polish for “fog” — is the most consequential black metal band to come out of Poland this century, and it got there by refusing almost everything the genre offers as decoration. No synths. No symphonic swell. No costumes beyond the balaclavas. Two men, a guitar tone like a wasp trapped in a jar, and drumming that never stops moving.

The project began in 2000 as a solo outlet for M., who had already been circling the same ideas in Kriegsmaschine. The early EPs — Presence and Mdłości, both 2006 — are rawer and more conventional than what followed. It was Groza (2008) that found the formula: long tracks built from a handful of riffs turned slowly over, like something being examined from every side and found wanting.

What separates Mgła from the enormous field of second-wave descendants is the drumming. Darkside plays against the riff rather than under it, filling the gaps with syncopation that would sound busy anywhere else, and the effect is that the music breathes where most black metal simply accelerates. Combined with M.’s trick of writing melodies that resolve downward — always downward — the result is a band whose records feel less like aggression than like a slow argument you are losing.

The lyrics are aphoristic, bleak, and unusually well written, closer to Cioran than to Satan. This is nihilism with a library card.
